The main objective of the IIBD Inclusive Language Toolkit for Canada is to catalyze transformative change by promoting language practices that are deeply rooted in the principles of equity, inclusivity, and social justice. It aims to serve as a comprehensive resource that equips individuals, organizations, and institutions with empirically-based guidelines for using language in a manner that respects and honors the diverse identities and experiences of people in Canada and beyond.



This project will involve several different steps for the students, including:


  • Researching existing language guidelines and best practices.
  • Developing a comprehensive resource that includes language guidelines and best practices.
  • Developing a set of tools and resources to help individuals, organizations, and institutions use language in an inclusive manner.
  • Developing a plan for disseminating the resource and tools to target audiences.
  • Developing a plan for monitoring and evaluating the impact of the resource and tools.


Deliverables

By the end of the project, students should demonstrate:


  • Understanding of existing language guidelines and best practices.
  • Development of a comprehensive resource that includes language guidelines and best practices.
  • Development of a set of tools and resources to help individuals, organizations, and institutions use language in an inclusive manner.
  • Development of a plan for disseminating the resource and tools to target audiences.
  • Development of a plan for monitoring and evaluating the impact of the resource and tools.



Final deliverables should include:


  • All source code.
  • A written report explaining the design process and outcomes.
  • A presentation summarizing the project and its impact.


Mentorship

IIBD will support students in the following ways:

Educational Resources:

  • Conduct an Orientation Workshop to introduce project objectives and scope.
  • Provide a Literature Repository for theoretical grounding.

Technical Resources:

  • Offer relevant Data Sets for empirical research.
  • Facilitate access to specialized Software and Platforms needed for the project.

Mentorship and Guidance:

  • Assign Mentors for individualized guidance.
  • Schedule Regular Check-ins for progress tracking.
  • Organize Peer Review Sessions for collaborative learning and feedback.

Final Review and Publication:

  • Offer Editing Support to ensure coherence and accuracy.
  • Engage subject-matter experts for Validation before publication.
  • Utilize IIBD's platforms for Dissemination, giving students due recognition.

Through these mechanisms, IIBD aims to create a supportive and resource-rich environment that enables students to successfully complete the project.
